To me, Tank is one of the most sorely underrated vocalists in the industry. Not only did he pen ALL of the great songs on Jamie Foxx's debut album, Unpredictable, he has continued to prove his consistency in production, songwriting, and just all around musical passion. Well, Tank has a gift for all of us on Black Friday! He's released a FREEEEEEE mixtape. I was so excited to give this a listen, and I won't ruin it for you. I'll just name some of the standout songs to me on the project.
The first full length track "Underrated" is really the track that I think speaks to all of our frustrations around Tank's career so far. While Trey Songz gets away with sounding like he's singing underwater or one of his parents was a sheep (sorry, Alex, I know you love Trey), and Keyshia Cole keeps getting love for screaming on EVERY song, Tank has yet to find the acclaim that he deserves. He says, "God, I've got a gift, but they just won't see me." I, too, have been bewildered by why he hasn't blown up by now...
"Dead Man Walking" is another stand out track to me, as Tank defends his woman against an ex who can't get the hint. This is one of those songs where Tank writes as if he's writing a movie script, and just sings it. It's hilarious! I love that J. Valentine also appears in the writing credits on Tank's mixtape, helping out on "Don't Be Mad At Me," which slaps, and "Tip Yo Cup." My favorite beat is on "Take You Outta Here," produced by The Composer, but Tank does most of the production for the mixtape, which I like. You should check it out HERE.
